Magnet Sites Not Working? Here's What to Do

Every few months, I see posts on Reddit: "Is 1337x down?" or "Can't access TorrentGalaxy." It happens constantly in the torrent world. Sites get blocked by ISPs, taken offline by hosting providers, or just go down temporarily. Here's a systematic approach to figuring out what's wrong and finding alternatives.

Step 1: Is the Site Actually Down?

Before assuming the worst, check if the site is down for everyone or just you:

  • DownDetector: Search for the site on downdetector.com — shows real-time outage reports
  • Is It Down Right Now: isitdownrightnow.com checks from multiple locations
  • Ask on Reddit: r/torrents or r/Piracy (though the latter has moved around) often have real-time reports

If the site is up for others but not for you, the problem is on your end — usually ISP blocking or DNS filtering.

Step 2: Check for ISP Blocking

Many ISPs block torrent sites by court order. Common symptoms:

SymptomLikely Cause
"This site can't be reached" in browserDNS block or IP block
ISP's "blocked content" page appearsCourt-ordered block
Site loads but search doesn't workPartial block (API endpoints blocked)
Works on mobile data but not home WiFiHome ISP blocking (not mobile carrier)

Quick Fixes for ISP Blocking

  1. Change your DNS. Switch from your ISP's DNS to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8). This bypasses DNS-level blocks instantly. On Android: Settings > Network > Private DNS > dns.google
  2. Use a VPN. A VPN bypasses all ISP-level blocks — DNS, IP, and deep packet inspection. This is the most reliable solution.
  3. Try a different network. Switch to mobile data to confirm it's your ISP blocking the site, not a global outage.
  4. Use Tor Browser. It routes around ISP blocks, though it's slower.

Step 3: Try Mirror/Proxy URLs

Many torrent sites operate mirror domains. When the main domain gets blocked, the mirrors keep working. However, be careful — fake mirrors exist that inject malware.

General approach:

  • Check the site's official social media (Twitter/X, Telegram) for mirror announcements
  • Use well-known proxy lists (but verify they're legitimate)
  • Be extremely cautious of mirrors that require you to install browser extensions or disable your adblocker

Step 4: Switch to an Aggregator

This is where I think the real solution lies. Instead of depending on individual sites that can go down, use a search tool that covers multiple sources. When one source is down, the others still work.

Magnet Googo does this well — it searches 80+ sources simultaneously. If a few sources are down, you barely notice because the other 70+ still return results. I switched to this approach after getting tired of site-hopping every time something went offline.

The same principle applies to Jackett or Prowlarr on desktop — they query multiple trackers and handle individual failures gracefully.

Step 5: Use DHT-Based Search

If all the traditional sites and aggregators fail, DHT-based search still works. BTDigg searches the DHT network directly, which is decentralized and can't be taken down. The results are less curated, but they're always available.

Common Sites and Their Status Patterns

SiteKnown IssuesWorkaround
1337xFrequently blocked by ISPsVPN or mirror
TorrentGalaxyDomain changes frequentlyCheck social media for current domain
RARBGShut down permanently in 2023Use alternatives
The Pirate BayPerpetual blocks and domain changesVPN + mirror list
SolidtorrentsGenerally stableDirect access usually works
BTDiggVery stable (DHT-based)Rarely goes down

The Permanent Solution

After years of dealing with site outages and blocks, here's what I've settled on:

  1. Primary search: Magnet Googo on Android — searches 80+ sources, so individual site problems don't matter
  2. Desktop automation: Jackett + Sonarr/Radarr — handles source failures automatically
  3. VPN always on: Bypasses ISP blocks before they become an issue
  4. DHT enabled in client: Ensures magnet links work regardless of tracker availability

With this setup, I haven't been blocked from finding anything in years. Individual sites going down is a non-issue when your tools search dozens of sources at once.

Quickest option: Use Magnet Googo to search 80+ magnet sources at once. Free, no ads, Android only.
